Adnoc Becomes First Energy Company to Deploy OpenAI Frontier AI
The state-owned UAE oil producer has signed a pact with G42 and OpenAI to incorporate advanced artificial intelligence into its commercial and field operations. The agreement makes Adnoc the first entity in the energy sector to utilize OpenAI's frontier technology to manage well operations, trading and the development of oilfields.
The collaboration was announced at the opening of the ADIPEC conference in Abu Dhabi, where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman identified energy as a primary global challenge. Altman noted that the growing demand for computing power to train and run AI models is increasing the necessity for new power plants and grid expansion, linking the progress of artificial intelligence directly to energy availability.

- @jackprandelli @jackprandelli ·about 7 hours ago ·Commentary 🚨Energy. That was @OpenAI @sama ’s 1 word answer when asked to name 1 challenge the world faces right now, at the @ADIPECOfficial opening ceremony. It’s a striking answer from the man building the world’s most famous AI, given on stage at the world’s biggest energy show. Every AI model runs in a data centre and every data centre runs on electricity, around the clock, with no days off. The models get better with more computing power. More computing power needs more power plants, more gas and more grid. So the AI race is turning into an energy race, and the countries with spare energy hold the cards. That’s why Altman is in Abu Dhabi. This morning ADNOC Group became the 1st energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier, with G42, across oilfield development, well management and trading. AI helps energy companies produce more efficiently and energy companies power AI. The setting fits the message. ADIPEC 2026 runs from 2 to 5 November, with a record 2,260 exhibitors, more than 1,800 speakers and over 239,000 visitors expected from more than 170 countries. Its theme this year is energy security, resilience and investment. Altman summed it up in 1 word. I’ll be following it all week. #ADIPEC2026 The AI race is turning into an energy race, and the countries with spare energy hold the cards
